Rules that apply to every fix

  1. Back up before you touch anything. Any operation involving disks, the system or passwords should start with a verified Time Machine backup.
  2. Start with the simplest step. Restart, swap the cable, forget and rejoin the network — those three solve a surprising amount.
  3. Change one variable at a time. If you alter five settings at once, you will not know which one caused the result.
  4. Do not disable security features globally. Gatekeeper, SIP and FileVault exist to protect you. Turning them off permanently is a bad trade.
  5. Write down what you changed. Which settings moved, which commands ran — that is what makes a problem reversible.
